He forgot to bow [at the end of his performance] - jumped off the bench and said 'The End' with his big grin and ran down the steps. All chuckled."
2021.11.05 Virtual events have been the norm during the last year, and the MTAC Convention was no exception. For MTAC's second Virtual Convention, the Convention committee worked hard to bring about a more innovative and immersive experience.
This year's Virtual Convention featured:
▪ 5 Featured Artist recitals
▪ 6 Master Classes
▪ Installation of the 2021-2023 MTAC State Board of Directors
▪ 90 student recitals
▪ 25 sessions and presentations
▪ 1,844 Convention attendees
Featured artists Brillante, the mother-daughter piano duo of Lenora Brown and Heather Smits, gave a beautiful virtual recital at the end of the Convention. Thanks to the virtual nature of the recital, the duo was able to add a unique element of costume and location changes. Both the Jacob Szekely Trio and the Josh Nelson Trio created an intimate performance experience by bringing the audience into their studios.
This year's sessions and presentations covered a range of topics, from diversifying repertoire and practice techniques to tips
on working with younger students. Even though the sessions were hosted through Zoom, many of the presenters invited the
attendees to actively participate with sing alongs and dance steps, and to engage through the Chat features.
MTAC partnered with the platform Whova to provide a one-stop virtual experience. Through Whova, Convention attendees were able to view recitals, participate in sessions, and engage in the Community boards with their fellow members and students- all from the comfort of their own home. Convention attendees were also given access to the Convention archive until July 31, allowing them to relive their favorite moments or catch the moments they missed.
The Convention Committee is already planning the 2022 Convention and can't wait to announce more information about it in MTAC News. Stay tuned for news and updates from our Convention Program Co-Chairs.

2021.07.04 Fullerton and Fountain Valley’s Yamaha Music Academy has been honored with the SupportMusic Merit Award from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. The SupportMusic Merit Award recognizes individual schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
“Music education is an integral part of a child’s development providing them with discipline while engaging in musical activities.” said Carlton Liu, Music Director. “To have received this honor from NAMM Foundation further confirms our mission to continue serving our communities and allow students to enjoy the fun of playing music.”
To qualify for the SupportMusic Merit Award, Yamaha Music Academy answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
Since the passage by Congress in 2015 of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and a stated emphasis on a well-rounded education, many school districts have re-committed to music and arts education programs and found that in this time of a national pandemic, provides a valuable way to keep students engaged in school. ESSA provides designated funding for well-rounded educational opportunities through Title IV Part A Student Academic Success and Achievement grants. NAMM Foundation research has revealed that these grants are being widely used by school districts to address instructional gaps in access to music and arts education.
“How sad it is without music in this world! Music speaks in a way to connect people; tells stories about a culture; brings joy to everyone’s life.”
Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music: After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers and that students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school, but also to attend college as well. Everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children than in those without music training. Significantly, listening skills are closely tied to the ability to: perceive speech in a noisy background, pay attention, and keep sounds in memory. Later in life, individuals who took music lessons as children show stronger neural processing of sound: young adults and even older adults who have not played an instrument for up to 50 years show enhanced neural processing compared to their peers. Not to mention, social benefits include conflict resolution, teamwork skills, and how to give and receive constructive criticism.

2021.04.02 - The pandemic did not deter our students' dedications to their study in music. With remote sessions, they continue to learn tirelessly and take part in many MTAC's activities. The annual Composers Today contest is a great outlet allowing our composition students to receive valuable evaluation from outside judges and even to be awarded for their creative works. Without exception, students of Mr. Carlton Liu are recognized again for their outstanding achievements.
Kaya Baird, age 10, won first place in Division 3 (age 11 and under) with her composition "Prelude and Dance to the Glorious Sunrise" for flute, viola and piano; when Kyle Yeung, age 12, received second place in Division 4 (age 13 and under). Composers Today State Contest received entries from students through MTAC's different branches in California. All compositions were individually adjudicated according to divisions categoried by age. Winners will also have an opportunity to showcase and perform the winning piece in MTAC's State Convention every year in the summer.
2021.01.15 - ABRSM (Associated Board Royal Schools of Music) sets the international standard of music examination. Established in the UK over a century ago, ABRSM was "inspired by disinterested motives for the benefit of musical education... which would genuinely provide a stimulus and an objective for a high standard of achievement". Under the authority of the Board, these exams are impatially evaluated under strict guidelines and the results are officially recognized by accredited institutions.
Despite of the pandemic that disrupts all face-to-face adjudications, ABRSM continues to offer online testing to ensure students are carrying on their music studies without lapses. Our student, Kristen Leopoldo took advantage of the online test and earned herself the Grade 5 diploma with honor in singing under the guidance of Miss Ikuko, who is the LRSM (Licenciate Royal Schools of Music) title holder of ABRSM. Nothing can stop our students to acheive their goals and we are always here to tiredlessly mentor every student one by one until they reach their potential.
2020.12.20 - Amidst this uncertain time during the pandemic, music continues to inspire our students everyday while being locked down at home day after day. Vivian Tien, a dedicated student of Miss Tig, brings home the silver medal in the MTAC Orange County Branch Theme Festival. Despite this year's audience is absent for the performance, participants still needs to present their best in front of a camera to be adjudicated by a panel of judges. A Grade 8 ABRSM diploma holder, Vivian played the first movement of Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata in Division 10 of the annual festival which current theme is Classic era.
2020.08.09 - NAMM has announced the 2020 receipients of the Support Music Merit Award (SMMA). We are honored that both branches of our school are among the 148 music schools from around the USA selected and acknowledged for our commitment to music education. This award recognizes that Yamaha Music Academy is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The legislation guides policy implementation in the states and replaces the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) which was often criticized for an overemphasis on testing-while leaving behind subjects such as music. ESSA recommends music and the arts as important elements of a well-rounded education for all children.

Also a winner of California Teachers Association’s Ralph J. LAS VEGAS (PRWEB) JUNE 23, 2017
More than 20 representatives from 18 Yamaha Music Schools across the country recently attended the Yamaha Music School Advantage program designed to assist educators in tuning up their performance.
Held in Las Vegas on June 15, the free workshop was sponsored by Yamaha as part of the company’s Dealer Development Services, which is celebrating its 20-year milestone this year. It was led by Alan Friedman, CPA and partner with Friedman, Kannenberg & Company, P.C., and Tom Hemphill, marketing manager, Yamaha Music Education, who used case studies and role playing to give music school teachers hands-on experience navigating challenges facing their schools today.
Music School Advantage assists these institutions in recognizing and responding to a changing marketplace. The workshop serves as an essential tool for Yamaha Music Schools to develop relationships and trust with their local communities on a personal level. In addition, the program helps develop and sharpen skills in finances, sales, marketing, operation and employee training.
“Yamaha Music School Advantage was met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction, along with a significant increase in attendance this year,” said Garth Gilman, corporate vice president, Yamaha Corporation of America. “Aside from the industry-leading Yamaha Music School model, one of the ways Yamaha brings value to our business partners is through this program. Providing expert advice from nationally respected business advisors that can be immediately utilized by owners and key staff to drive operational excellence is a key draw.”
All who attended praised the program. “Music School Advantage was not only insightful, but also practical,” said Julia Liu of Yamaha Music Academy of Fountain Valley, California. “Everything was easy to apply and understand for music schools and owners, and I appreciated the topics, speakers and arrangements.”
“It was great to talk money. If finances are not in order, everything else is in trouble,” said Heidi Grimes at East Valley Yamaha Music School in Chandler, Arizona. “This experience was very enjoyable, and necessary for continuing excellence.”
Eileen Tan of 7 Notes in Frisco, Texas, thanked the seminar’s organizers and instructors: “Thank you for doing this. This is great for school owners, and it should be held yearly!” According to Steve Jensen at Jensen’s Yamaha Music School in Castle Hills, Texas, “The seminar was very clear and helpful with potentially arcane issues.” Carlton Liu of Harmony Music World, Yamaha Music Academy in Fullerton, California, referred to the experience as “very informative, with great presentation.”
Music School Advantage was held in conjunction with the popular Yamaha Financial Advantage seminar, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year, having trained more than 600 dealer participants in 19 training sessions. Also featured was Succession Advantage, a program that helps dealers plan sustained continuity through business operation. To expand the exposure of Music School Advantage, music dealers in attendance at the three-day event were provided with an hour-long presentation to emphasize the importance of music education.

(A featured article of Mr. Carlton Liu's student Sharon Hurvitz as the graduating class of the Colbuen Community School of Performing Arts) 2016.04.21 - The Community School will salute our graduating high school seniors with a special event and reception in their honor on Saturday, May 21, at 4 pm in Thayer Hall. Each high school senior’s name will be read, along with their college plans, and they will come onstage to receive a gift from the school. We are pleased to announce this year's student speaker will be Sharon Hurvitz.
Sharon Hurvitz first began her studies at the Community School in the fall of 2009, when she enrolled in voice lessons with Kay Montgomery and a music theory class with Kathy Sawada. "The Colburn School is like having a second home," Sharon said. "We are really blessed to have been able to study in a pre-college division of a world-renowned conservatory, which is home to some of the greatest teachers you could ever find." In the fall of 2013, Sharon shifted her musical focus more fully on music theory and composition. That year, she began studying with the Community School's Chair of Music Theory Warren Spaeth and was accepted into the Los Angeles Philharmonic's very competitive Composer Fellowship Program. Founded by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky, the Composer Fellowship Program is now directed by composer Andrew Norman. Only four students are accepted into the program every two years. Through the Composer Fellowship Program, Sharon has composed two pieces for full orchestra, which premiered in 2014 and 2015 at the LA Philharmonic's Symphonies for Schools concerts; four short chamber works that were performed by members of the orchestra; a string quartet for the Calder Quartet commemorating the upcoming 2018-2019 LA Philharmonic Centennial; and a choral work read by members of the LA Master Chorale; all while studying with former CFP Composer-Director James Matheson, and teaching artists A. J. McCaffrey and Sarah Gibson. Upon graduating from this two year program, Sharon was invited to continue for an unprecedented third year as a Senior Fellow.
In 2014, Sharon began studying with Colburn Conservatory composition faculty Dr. Bruce Miller. And in 2015, Sharon was invited to join the Conservatory’s sophomore theory class taught by Mr. Spaeth. This was the first time in the Colburn School’s history that a Community School student has had the opportunity to participate in a Conservatory class. "Sharon is a gifted, multi-talented, hard-working student who is totally engaged with the topics she studies," Mr. Spaeth said. "She is a naturally gifted musician who hears beyond the written pitches."
This year, Sharon was commissioned to compose Outside the Circle, an orchestral work, which premiered in an LA Philharmonic Community Concert at San Gabriel Mission Playhouse in February, and a quartet for ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble), scheduled to premiere this summer at the Ojai Music Festival. The Olympia Philharmonic Society has also commissioned Sharon to compose an orchestral work that will premiere in June. Most recently, Sharon was honored as an Emerging Composer by the 2016 Tribeca New Music Competition. She also won first prize in the High School Division of the 2015 Robert Avalon International Competition for Composers, is a Music Composition Honorable Mention Winner (2016) and Merit Winner (2015) of two National YoungArts Foundation Competitions, was a 2014 Finalist in the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, and a 2015 Finalist in the National Young Composers Challenge. She also was the first prize winner two years in a row at the Music Teacher’s Association of California Composers Today State Contest and has been granted its highest accolade for high school and college-age composers, a five-year (2015-2020) honorary membership in The Young Composers Guild. Sharon is a senior at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where she is also a College Board AP Scholar with Honor. Sharon will attend Columbia University this fall and major in composition.
"I felt really humbled to be asked to speak at an event that is so personally meaningful, which celebrates a turning point in our lives," Sharon said. "It is an opportunity for me to take stock and to reflect in an active way about the significance of music in my life, about where our generation should take music and dance from here, and how we can contribute to it."
If you are a graduating high school senior, please send your college decision and intended degree program to Diane Cano-Casas at 213-621-1045 or dcasas@colburnschool.edu, as well as your RSVP for the May event. (By Sara Hiner)

2013.01.31 - Standard music lessons meet once a week but more and more students are taking advantage of seeing their teacher twice or even three times a week. Despite that these students are neither preparing for exams nor competitions, their parents recognize the importance of professional guidance especially in learning musical instruments. One of the most common problems with music students is that they are practicing mistakes before the teacher can correct them before a week has passed. In the end, students may spend more time undoing the errors. Having more than one lesson per week allows teachers to catch these mistakes sooner and preventing them from forming into habits. Instead of the frustration of wasting time to relearn, students progress in an exponential pace. Furthermore these extra lessons also act as additional practice sessions but with a knowledgable coach. Students then may practice less at home and the antagonizing daily routine to make your children practice becomes a thing in the past. Gymnastics, ice skating, ballet, karate and many sport activities do meet more than once a week. So why not music classes? Let us know if you are interested in setting up multiple weekly lessons for your children so that you can see them excel. We do offer multiple weekly lessons discount to benefit families.
